Bertha Sawyer Obituary

Bertha Virginia Sawyer of Decatur passed away peacefully on May 18, 2026, at the age of 84.

Born on May 22, 1941, in Social Circle, Georgia, Bertha was the youngest child of Norris and Erma Knox Sr. After the passing of her mother when Bertha was just nine months old, she was lovingly raised by her cousin and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Gober.

Bertha was known for her vibrant spirit, unwavering strength, and deep love for music and community. During the Civil Rights Movement, she attended Albany State University, where she joined the Freedom Singers in 1961. Through song, she actively participated in nonviolent protests for justice and equality, standing alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other courageous men and women. Her angelic voice became a ministry of hope, unity, and courage during a pivotal time in history. Her commitment to the movement ultimately led to her expulsion from the university.

Throughout her life, Bertha remained passionate about singing and serving her community. She found joy in arts and crafts, science fiction, admiring the sky and clouds, playing virtual games, and never turned down a good game of spades. Above all, she was a devoted Christian who cherished time spent with her family, friends, and beloved pets.

She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Alesia Mitchell (Willie); her son, Michael Jamison Daniel; her beloved grandchildren, Taylor Mitchell, Payton Mitchell, Kendall Mitchell, and Christian Daniel; and a host of (great-)nieces, (great-)nephews, other relatives, friends, and her close family-friends at Philips Tower in Decatur.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank M. Sawyer; her daughter, Kimberly Michelle Sawyer; her parents, Norris and Erma Knox Sr.; her sisters, Barbara Perry and Arlene Knox Thomas; her brother, Norris Knox Jr.; and nephews whom she regarded as her sons.

A viewing will be held on May 29, 2026, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Rucker Funeral Home (2199 Candler Road, Decatur, GA 30032).
