Celebrating the Life of Emanuel D. Walls

Emanuel was born on July 20, 1945 in the quiet rhythm of small-town life of Devereux, Georgia.   He grew up the only boy among three sisters, which meant he never stood a chance of escaping the world of women, but truth be told, he secretly loved every minute of it. Raised with his beloved Aunt Maude “Beauty” Ingram, the two shared a bond more like brother and sister than nephew and aunt, shaping the foundation of Emanuel’s life with love, laughter, and a deep sense of family.

Emanuel lived a life filled with faith, music, and a playful spirit. To his family, he was Butloo, Soup, and Fruit, and to his granddaughter Kyla, he was simply “Papa”, a title he carried with the greatest pride.

Emanuel worked with his hands and his heart, serving as a skilled carpenter and electrician. For more than 25 years, he also poured his energy into promoting gospel music, traveling some but mostly staying close to his home in Hancock County. He was also deeply devoted to the principles of service and brotherhood, proudly serving as a member of a Masonic Lodge, where he achieved the highest degree, 33rd. His faith guided him every step of the way, grounded in one of his favorite scriptures, Isaiah 40:31: “But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles.” Emanuel loved eagles, perhaps because they mirrored his own quiet resilience and ability to rise above.

He found joy in the simple pleasures of life: stopping by Webster Pharmacy for strawberry ice cream, driving to Sandersville for a slice of cheese and pepperoni pizza, or sitting down to a favorite meal of fried chicken, fried fish, and mashed potatoes. He loved butter pecan ice cream and strawberry milkshakes, and his presence was often marked by the familiar scent of his favorite colognes—Black Suede or Carolina Herrera 212.

Music was at the heart of Emanuel’s soul. In his younger years, he enjoyed rock and roll, but gospel became his lifelong passion. Songs like “Thunder” and “Build Me a Cabin in Glory” spoke to his spirit and reflected the hope he carried. He and his family shared many evenings watching gospel singers on TV, creating memories that will live on for generations.

Emanuel had a playful side too. He loved westerns, especially John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, and Fred Williamson films, and he enjoyed a good laugh; like hiding in the house to scare Tonya and Chris after school, or teasing his nieces and nephews. His sense of humor and love for life brightened the days of all who knew him.

Though he never cared much for sports, he enjoyed the finer things in his own way: a good Italian cigar, a favorite saying, and a personality that was uniquely his. His family will always remember his quick wit, his strong faith, and the way he made ordinary days feel extraordinary.

Emanuel now joins in eternal rest with his loved ones: Agnes Walls (mother), Dollie D. Walls (father), Ruthie Mae Swint (sister), and Fannie Mae Clayton (sister). 

Emanuel leaves behind a legacy of laughter, music, faith, and family devotion. He is survived by his wife, Ola Walls, his daughter LeTonya Walls, son Emanuel Christopher Walls (Jaylnn) whom he shared with Mary Harper; and granddaughter Kyla Emya Walls, and his sister Dorothy Lee Smith (Charles).  

His memory will be cherished forever by his family including his three brother-in-laws, Willie Swint, James Clayton, and Charles Smith, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and all who were blessed to know him. His life was a song, his story a testimony, and his presence a gift. He will always be remembered, never forgotten.
