Evelyn W. Baker, born on July 9, 1944, in Atlanta, Georgia, peacefully passed into eternal rest on September 11, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was the daughter of Foy Tiller Jr. and Francis Tiller, who preceded her in death.
A proud native of Georgia, Evelyn excelled in her education, graduating in 1962 as the valedictorian of her high school class in Marietta, GA. She continued her academic journey at Talladega College in Alabama and later pursued further studies at the former Atlanta School of Business.
Evelyn began her distinguished career in public service in April 1967 with the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of the Solicitor. Throughout her career, she rose through the ranks, taking on leadership roles such as Secretary to the Regional Director, Training Officer, and Administrative Support Division Manager for the Office of Workers’ Compensation Programs. Over the decades, she dedicated her service to the Department of Labor, earning numerous awards and recognitions, including her most treasured honor—the U.S. Department of Labor’s Distinguished Career Service Award in 1997. After 41 years and 28 days of dedicated service, Evelyn retired from the Department of Labor. She was also an active leader in Toastmasters International, achieving her CTM in 1992.
Her commitment to service extended far beyond her professional life. For over 25 years, she was a devoted member of Greater Bethany Baptist Church, where she faithfully served as Church Treasurer, participated in the Wright Smith Gospel Chorus, contributed to the Finance Committee, and engaged in children’s ministry. Evelyn was also actively involved with the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW), holding multiple leadership positions, including Treasurer and Life Member, and was honored as the 1992–1993 Member of the Year. Additionally, she dedicated her time and talents to her high school alumni organization, helping to establish a scholarship fund program that supported Black youth in Cobb County.
Evelyn’s life was a true testament to faith, service, and love. She was married for 46 years to her devoted husband, John W. Baker. Together, they raised two loving daughters, Sharika S. White and Marketia N. White.
She was also blessed with four godchildren, and two grandchildren, whom she cherished deeply. She leaves behind a legacy of excellence, compassion, and unwavering dedication to her family, church, and community. Evelyn’s memory will live on in the countless lives she touched through her work, her ministry, and her love.
