Mary Hicks was born on September 28,1940 in Union Springs, Alabama to a devoted mother, Beatrice Wingfield and father, Willie Roberson. After her family relocated to Georgia, Mary attended Carver High School in Atlanta. Being one of the oldest siblings in a home full of loving sisters and brothers, she often helped care for her younger siblings and developed a nurturing spirit.
On May 26, 1958, she married the love of her life, Eddie Hicks. Mary was no stranger to a big family, as such, she and Eddie shared their love and created their own family with five energetic children. They were married for 61 years. Mary and Eddie enjoyed cooking big meals to share with family. They would often open their home to all the children and their friends. It was affectionately known as ‘the fun house’. She had high expectations for her children and wanted them to thrive in all areas of their lives.
Mary and Eddie began their spiritual journey together in 1972, when they were baptized as Jehovah’s Witnesses. She served proudly as an auxiliary pioneer, and regularly participated in field service, Bible study, and attended conventions and assemblies throughout the southeastern United States. As a dedicated Bible reader, she taught her family Jehovah’s word and used her knowledge to support them through their trials and tribulations.
Because she wanted to work with people, not for people, she decided to begin working in a coffee house at Hartsfield Atlanta Airport. This marked the beginning of her corporate journey. She loved interacting with people and began to show ambition to do more. She was then given an opportunity to serve in the Yellow Pages division of Bell South where she learned to edit advertisements before they went to press. Although a working mother, she still found great joy in spending quality time with the people she loved most – her family.
In her leisure time, Mary enjoyed traveling to the sandy beaches in Florida and other popular destinations such as Virginia and New York. Her dream became a reality, when she was able to visit Bethel, the World Headquarters of Jehovah's Witnesses, located then in Brooklyn, NY.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Eddie Hicks; mother, Beatrice Wingfield; brother, Donald Wingfield; and sister Rosa Lee Robinson. She is survived by her children, Eric (Cookie) Hicks (Lenora), James (Jamie) Hicks, Anthony (Tony) Hicks (Charlotte), Yolanda (Ann) Hicks,
Benita James (Mark); four sisters, Mattie White, Martha Farmer, Alice Wingfield, Katie Jackson (Ray); two brothers, Jim Wingfield and Nelson Wingfield, brother-in law, Eugene Hicks along with a host of grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
