Steven Mason Obituary

Opening Acts

Throughout his journey, Steve was the main character of his destiny. He loved so many things that shaped his character: he was a true Renaissance Man.

Steven Craig Mason was born on July 17, 1966, in Waukegan, Illinois to James and Carol Mason. He graduated from North Chicago Community High School in 1984. Then he attended Southern Illinois University (SIU) as an undergrad in business.

Roles of a lifetime: Artist, Athlete, & Entertainer

Steve experienced the arts, sports, and entertainment at an early age. He joined the band in Neal Junior High School, and played the trombone for several years. He started in the Flames little league football and continued to play for the North Chicago High School Warhawks varsity football team. Steve also competed with the gymnastics team, and his specialty events were the steel rings, vault, and pommel horse. Steve’s love for the drama also began in high school. The mighty Warhawks drama team earned the honor of runners-up for the 1984 Illinois state-wide championship. His love and appreciation for music continued throughout his life, especially jazz and house music. Steve co-managed a dance group, the Boys Club Posse (BCP), two soloists, and one singing group. These groups received high praise from Rebe Jackson. Steve was inspired and touched by the Alvin Ailey Dance Troupe, and Steve attended each time the troupe performed in Atlanta. Throughout his journey, Steve was involved in theatre arts, having had opportunities to work with the Tyler Perry Studios and quite a few acting companies in Atlanta. He was dedicated to promoting acting and dancing to youth and young adults.

Spectacular Performances

Steve started his career at First Wisconsin Bank in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for many years. While living in Milwaukee, he was baptized at Greater Mount Sinai Church of God in Christ where he served on the church board as the vice chairperson. Steve moved to Atlanta in 2000 when he accepted a position with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). During his tenure at USDA, he worked hard, and he achieve a supervisory position and received numerous accolades. He retired from his position in the USDA Packers and Stockyards Division for the Eastern regional office in November 2022.  After which, he devoted a great deal of his time to serving on his subdivision's HOA Board (in Lithonia, GA).

Loving Legacy

Steve had a funny sense of humor in which he enjoyed playing practical jokes on family and friends. He enjoyed travelling, nature-walking, reading, poetry writing, leisure drives, all sports, and theater. Steve was preceded in death by his parents James and Carol Mason, and brothers, Marc (Armando) Mason and Ronald Mason. Steve leaves to cherish his memory with his brother James (Elizabeth) Mason, Jr, and twin sisters Deanne (James) Johnson and Dionne Mason; nephews Vincent Mason Jr, Pierre Mason and Kameron Neely; and great nephew Prince Mason.
